What We Do
Throughout the Year
Planning Applications:
We consider all applications relating to the East Coker Parish. Although we do not have the power to decide applications, it is true that Somerset County Planning Office do take note of our opinions and we consider it to be a core activity.
Recreation Ground:
We ensure this area is maintained and kept in good order for our pre-school, Nursery, the Football club and for anyone wishing to use this valuable village space for exercise including dogs.
The Pavilion:
The pavilion is used daily through term time by the pre-school and nursery. It is also a good space for children parties or meetings.
We have recently been granted planning permission to build a new pavilion and work is due to start shortly and will ultimately give the village a great venue to socialise, exercise, hold meetings, events or parties in. This space is maintained and cleaned weekly.
Footpaths:
In the parish of East Coker, we are fortunate to have a network of lovely footpaths which are well used. It is important that these are constantly maintained, kept in good order, clear and safe to pass through.
Village Ranger:
We employ a village ranger who comes every week to do all the maintenance, clearing, mowing and cleaning around the village. He works tirelessly to try and keep the drains clear, the litter picked and we always have a long list of Things To Do for him to do, especially at his time of year!
The Cemetery:
We make sure that our cemetery is maintained, the hedge rows and grass is cut whilst also looking after the Chapel.
Tree Warden:
We try and keep an eye on non-private trees around the parish to spot any that need lopping or cutting especially in the Paddock which has a range of unusual trees.
Defibrillators:
We are very lucky to have four debrillators in the village. These are located at the Helyar Arms, the Pavilion and the Village Café – and we have responsibility to make sure they are regularly checked. The fourth is located at the Village Hall but the Parish is not responsible for maintaining or servicing it.
Communications:
There are a number of ways that we try to keep the parish informed of news and information relating too or affecting village life from road closures to village events – this includes newsletters, email shots and the website.
Highways:
We are constantly in touch with Somerset County Highways department regarding many aspects of road maintenance and safety matters in the village. This has become more necessary recently,
Speed Indicating Device (SID):
Now that we have one in the village it needs moving every 2/3 weeks to one of 3 locations.
Miscellaneous:
There are a multitude of other matters that need our attention, some small, others large and time-consuming.
We have a vacancy for councillor at the moment so if you think you might be able to spare some time and have something to offer the council, we would love to hear from you!
